NYU Tuition Will Reach an All Time High This Year

NYU tuition will reach an all time high in the 2015 16 academic year, according to figures published on the NYU website’s expected expenses page.

Expenses range from $70,586 to $78,112., while tuition varies by school These approximations include health insurance, fees, living expenses and tuition.

Incoming freshmen responded to the increased costs for the university on social websites. Nia Mirza, an incoming freshman started a petition claiming because freshmen are not notified about the particular costs of attending NYU until after they registered, that the tuition should return to last year’s amounts. The request has nearly 3,000 signatures as of press time.

“The cost of attendance (annual) was suddenly increased after pupils paid the registration deposit,” the petition reads. “People who planned their budget based on the previously stated costs, and have exhausted all their resources in this, are in a significant trouble.”

NYU representative John Beckman said the difference in cost of attendance for incoming freshmen is a result of the time of when its expected expenses can be calculated by NYU for the subsequent academic year. An approximation for travel and passage prices was added for the first time this season.

“Contrary to what the request claims, platform.gpnys.com and fees have not suddenly been raised,” Beckman said.

Incoming freshman Anya Felix said the deadline for many Early Decision II applicants to accept their decisions and remove other applications was March 11. She was unable to locate the updated figures until several days after she accepted her offer.

“I merely believe it is not cool pushing ED students to accept entrances until they understand what they are coming up against,” Felix said. “I know I can’t manage my new cost of attendance. It’s not fair to bind us to a deal that we did not even know the provisions of.”

Beckman said NYU hadn’t figured out prices for the following academic year by the time it accepted its early decision applicants. Early decision students are given the cost of attendance for 2014 15 as an approximation.

“The cost of attendance for NYU for 2014-15 is $66,542,” Beckman said. “So, of the appearing $4,500 difference between this year’s cost of attendance and next year’s, $2,000 is an estimate of indirect costs not paid to NYU, and the remainder is an annual increase in tuition and fees that — at about 3 percent — is in line with NYU’s recent history and that of other private universities.”

This really is not the first time NYU has been criticized for the high attendance cost. NYU has consistently been ranked as truly one of the most expensive universities in the state.

Mirza said the entire aim of the petition is a fall in total tuition fees for NYU students.

“The point of this petition is to condemn the skyrocketing costs of tuition, which is only affordable for pupils from very wealthy backgrounds,” the petition reads. “Great education is a right to all, regardless of financial strength. We are against the quantity of debt that students are forced to incur while studying at NYU.”
